Oh Lifelike (myspace), where have you been these last few months? I listened to your 2007 mixtape and it was fantastic, and your remixes adorn my iPod like an overdone North American Christmas tree, but where are your famous synth-laden lofty sounds in time for summer?

Here:

Track: Plastiscines – Barcelona (Lifelike Remix) (listen).

And yes, I could have easily put a picture of Plastiscines (myspace) for this post, being the all-girl French superstars that they are, but that would have been just too predictable, wouldn’t it.

Doesn’t anyone play that old stuff anymore?

Do you ever feel like that? Like you’re just sooo old and searching for a sound which you just can’t find anymore?

Is it a matter of music changing or is it just a state of mind?

These questions and more run through my mind as I end my undergraduate days and contemplate starting work.

It probably is just a state of mind. There’s a lot of good stuff floating around right now. But I can’t help but feel it’s time for a new K.I.M. (myspace) EP or Lifelike (myspace) anthem. I guess those days really are gone.

As Jerry Seinfeld once said, what defines old men is their ability to pinpoint the best days of their life and continue dressing in that same fashion for the rest of their lives. Is it the same with music taste? Does this mean those times have passed?

Did the world forever change after I saw Daft Punk or am I just growing up?

PS. This post is not intended to sound hipster/ironic in a HRO sense, I really am this vapid.

Also, I really need a new mixer. So sick of this Numark piece of shit.

EDIT: If you’re feeling really existential and want to get mad, just read this (and the comments).

Presets + BMW.

19 05 2008

Saw the new BMW ad on TV last night and was blown away. Not only a Presets song in a commercial, but it’s a remix no less! Here’s what Modular had to say:

A technicoloured trip through crystal cities and swirling universes, this new video for The Presets is a snapshot straight from the mind’s eye of some of Australia’s premiere creative gurus.

On the hunt for some music to blast out of their German car stereos, BMW heard the 2005 stormer Are You The One? and flipped.

However we wanted to revitalise the engine room of the song and commissioned a remix by French whiz-kid (and all around nice guy), Lifelike.

The result was an post-electro love child, that bridged the gap between Beams and The Presets sophomore album, Apocalypso.

To celebrate BMW and Modular approached Jonathan Zawada and Shane Sakkeus (alongside the production brainiacs at Collider) to create a new video algorithm to solve the age old problem “what do youget when you cross The Presets + BMW + LifeLike + Zawada + Sakkeus + Collider?” The answer; a joy ride of the imagination that results in pure optical bliss.

Traversing through parallel worlds of rainbow moon rocks, pyramids, and cosmic clouds, THE ONE(s) navigates the heavens and the earths alike. Ecstasy to the eye. Drink it in people.

The Presets + Lifelike = This Boy’s In Love

27 03 2008

When The Presets (myspace) dropped the first single off their forthcoming LP Apocalypso, I wasn’t as hyped as others. I just found ‘My People’ to be a bit much, it had all the intensity of a smashing Presets track but it perhaps wasn’t what I was expecting – ‘Girl and the Sea’ anybody?

In any event, after seeing it thrown down at Nevereverland I was sold.

To cut to the chase, their second single, ‘This Boy’s in Love’, has got me psyched in a whole different way. The first I heard of it was on Lifelike’s myspace, where I noticed the French DJ/Producer was doing a remix of it. Then lo-and-behold Waves At Night came through with the original, and now the remix!

Track: The Presets – This Boy’s In Love (Lifelike Remix) (over at Waves At Night)

Is it just me or can you totally hear the KIM influence in the building synth melodies a la ‘Fistogram’? Well of course Kim has a bit to do with how it sounds, but I’m really digging where both outfits are going with it.

So lifelike.

Lifelike (myspace) is a French producer/dj who first caught my eye as the subject of a Kidz By Colette post a while back. But as well as putting out a killer mix which matched up sleek raver sounds with new-school electro, he’s a top remixer and producer.

Track: Lifelike – So Electric (listen).

Track: Chromeo – Needy Girl (Lifelike Remix) (listen).

Track: Sia – A Day Too Soon (Lifelike Remix) (listen).
