The kids on SYN’s Sketchy at Best (I think they’re older than I am, but it’s SYN so they’ll always be kids) played MGMT’s ‘Time to Pretend’ this afternoon and it got me thinking: most of their other tracks have been remixed to hell and back, I wonder what’s up with this one? Answer: Diplo (myspace) remix. There’s a lot of hate on this remix in the blogosphere and I can see why. It destroys the riff, destroys the vocals and it’s fidget, which is a love it or hate it sort of genre. Apparently Boys Noize used to drop it. I could see that, but it’s not exactly prime set material.

Track: MGMT – Time to Pretend (Diplo Remix).

On an unrelated note, I stumbled across this remix competition for the Moulinex and Xinobi project Disco Texas. Find the stems here. I’m not going to attempt to remix it, but I’m fascinated by the components of a good dance track stripped bare. Got some basic bass, lead and string parts, some beats (but not a lot, you gots to make your own) and some samples which have conveniently been pre-mashed into the usual style. There’s a lot of skill just to make these into a song, let alone something good. I’ll be interested to see the results of the competition.
